Thousands of unprotected surveillance webcams are positioned all over the world. They become a privileged observation point for hackers, voyeurs, experimenters. Everyone sees everything, protected by anonymity, in the uninterrupted flow of BITS that spread images over the planet. Who controls and who is controlled? This project reflects on visibility and its role in photography, whilst exploring the non-technological use of technology and losing privacy without realising it. For months I surfed and explored the webcam world, watching the streets, the courtyards, the houses of those who installed cameras without changing the default usernames or passwords. It is easy to find and observe. The world is seen in a confused sequence of fragments, unknown lives and places. I found solitude and vulnerability and felt more alone and fragile. |
